Bar Management: where do I train to do it?

What are the first steps towards being a Bar Manager? Our expert gives some tips.

The issue

I?m 22 years old and have some experience in bar work. I?d like to manage a bar either in the UK or abroad, but I'm not sure what the first step is.

Should I go to college or get on-the-job training?

Please give me some tips on where I should start looking for a job.

Expert answer

Julian Bradwell, human resources director at the Greene King Pub Company, replies:

Most managed pub companies will have a structured training and career path. I would recommend you look for a company that supports both your career and your personal aspirations. This needs to be a place where you feel you can get on with the job and the people and enjoy being a part of the company.

Take action

There are several ways you can start the process of finding the right place.

  • Sit down and think about the key things you are looking for, such as career opportunity, training, style of outlet, type of business and salary.
  • Use the internet and make contact with the three companies that best suit your needs. Find out if you could do a short-term work placement in one of their local bars.
  • If not, pop round to a local pub and speak to some of the staff. This should enable you to find out more about the company at the grass-roots level to help you make a sound decision.
