How can a Sales Manager move into Catering Training? Our expert gives advice on getting the right qualifications...
The issue
I'm 41, and at the moment I'm a Sales Manager for a small equipment company. I moved into this area after I was made redundant from my job as a Catering Manager.
I love cooking and working with people, which is why I think I've got a lot to offer as a Trainer in the catering industry. But I'm not sure how to go about becoming one.
My work experience includes:
- selling everything from teaspoons to kitchens
- working as a Head Chef
- managing a team of 64 catering staff
I'd like to help others further their careers and think that I could do this in the catering industry. How can I become a trainer? Could you give me some ideas on where to start?
Expert answer
Hannah Bailey, chief operating officer at Chess Partnership replies:
Training is an area that many people are interested in going into. Unfortunately, it isn't the easiest area to enter without specific qualifications and experience.
Take action
To begin with, you need to look into gaining one of these qualifications:
- GTT (Group Training Techniques)
- CTA (Craft Trainer Award)
- a one-day Assessor training award, such as the D32 or the D33.
Once qualified, you could consider joining a training company such as VT Plus.
...and remember
Getting these qualifications, which recruitment consultants often look for, and getting experience with a training company should stand you in good stead in the industry.
