How do you get into the HR side of the hospitality industry? Our expert advises...

The issue

I'm currently in the final year of a degree in hospitality and tourism management.

When I graduate I'd like to go into the human resources area of the industry. However, my experience lies mainly in restaurant and front desk areas, although I have covered some aspects of human resources on my course.

I understand that most employers require a Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development (CIPD) qualification, which I don't have. What would be the best course of action for me to take?

Expert answer

Julian Bradwell, human resources director of the Greene King Pub Company, replies:

The CIPD qualification is a great way to open the door to interviews and to take the first steps into a career in HR. It would be of value to pursue this route.

However, the qualification isn't vital as it is becoming equally important to have experience at the sharp end of the industry so that you can prove you can meet the demands of the business.

Take action

  • Think about the areas you are specifically interested in, such as training or recruitment.
  • When sending off your applications, focus on your strengths and experiences in human resources so far.

...and remember

There are many opportunities to join the profession at a junior level, given the right skills and personal attributes, so don't get put off.
