What are the options for a college leaver? Our expert shares a few ideas...
The issue
I'm in my last year of college (level 3) and I'm hoping to work in London or in the south. Could you give me some idea of a good place to start as I want to get some good experience under my belt? I'm keen to begin somewhere well known or with a good reputation.
Expert answer
Jane Riches, national programmes manager at Springboard UK, replies:
First decide which sector of hospitality you'd like to work in. Would you prefer, for example, a restaurant chain, a hotel, a bar or pub, or a food service management company?
Also, think about the type of department you'd like to work in, perhaps concentrating on two or three to keep your options open.
If you want to travel and gain international hospitality experience, I'd definitely suggest working for an international group, and staying for at least six months to a year before gaining a transfer abroad.
The ideal job for someone in your position is with a company, large or small, which is prepared to invest in training. That way you can learn on the job, attend courses and gain the recognition which can lead you to a fast climb up the career ladder.
Take action
To search for jobs:
- Look at job websites to see what vacancies are available.
- Use the web to look up details of companies you'd like to work for ? the often have vacancies advertised and details on how to apply for the positions.
- Look for vacancies advertised in industry journals and national newspapers.
...and remember
As you may not have much work experience, make sure when you attend any interviews to sell your interpersonal skills as that will most certainly help you get a foot in the door.
