Getting a foothold in the UK hospitality job market can be tricky. Our expert gives a few helpful tips.

The issue

I recently emigrated to the UK on a British passport and am trying to start a career here.

Although I have a background in the hospitality industry including Hotel Conference and Banqueting and Conference and Event Management, I'm finding it really difficult to get a job. I keep being told I have "no UK experience? or am "too qualified? for whatever position is going. Help!

Where do I go from here?

Expert answer

Steve Nunes, managing director catering, Blue Arrow:

I can understand your frustration at not being able to find work in the UK despite your expensive experience. But there are some things you can do to make it easier for you.

Take action

Part of the reason employers may resist taking on overseas workers is that there can be a lot of red tape involved. If you can take care of some of that for them, they may be more open to you.

  • Ask ex-employers to write you a reference that you can take with your to interviews.
  • Get an email address for ex-employers so that a UK employer can contact them.
  • When you go for an interview, take proof of your eligibility to work in the UK, eg your passport, with you.

...and remember

You must be prepared to work on a temporary basis or at a lower level than you are used to. If you're good then it will be spotted. So much of the hospitality industry is about proving in the job and capable people rise through the ranks really quickly.
