Getting the most out of online applications: all you need to know

Many hospitality companies recruit through the internet. Here's what you need to remember if you're applying online...

What's the difference between an online application and a postal one?

The fundamentals are the same but the rigid format can make it much more difficult to get noticed. It is still essential to provide all details and qualifications. A significant number of applications will be rejected because they lack the necessary documentation, or have failed to give all their details.

To stand out, ensure your application is:

  • meticulous
  • well-thought through
  • thorough
  • polite

What should I do first?

You will probably need to complete a form. It will have a number of fields to fill in, only some of them will be compulsory (these will usually be indicated). Key points:

  • Make sure you fill in every field.
  • The more detail you give, the more likely you are to get through to the next stage.
  • Every question on the application form is there for a reason.
  • Be truthful and careful.

What about my CV?

On some sites, such as Caterer.com, you will be given the option of attaching your CV to your email in Word, PDF or RTF file format instead of filling out a form. Alternatively, there will be a box to add your CV. Some sites have both a CV attachment option and an additional information box.

How do I write a CV?

  • Don't worry about the size of the box: it will scroll down.
  • Ideally, write the CV in Word first, and then cut and paste it.
  • Don't use different fonts, bolds, italics or bullet points.
  • Make sure everything is spelt correctly.
  • Present all the relevant information.
  • Include all dates, the names of places you've worked, and your qualifications.

Do I have to write out a new CV every time I apply for a job?

Once you've filled in the form, it will make up your online CV. If the recruitment site is any good, that CV will be saved and you can attach it to any and every application you make. In many cases that CV will also sit on a database that employers can search for prospective candidates.

What are "keywords"?

Recruiters search their CV database for words to describe the attributes they want. You need to anticipate what they are, then include those words in your online CV. Tweak your CV for every application to highlight the skills most relevant to that job.

What happens once I have applied?

You'll probably get a reply by email, so make sure you check your inbox regularly.
