What does the job involve?

As Housekeeper, you'll be responsible for cleaning the guest rooms in a hotel, and most if not all of the public areas. You'll often be given your own floor or area to clean. Working as part of a team, you'll liaise with the Head Housekeeper to keep them informed when rooms are ready to let.

Key responsibilities

Important areas of a Housekeeper's work include:

  • making sure all rooms are in first-class condition for new arrivals and guests who are staying on
  • completing the work efficiently
  • keeping the equipment you use in sound working order and good condition, for example vacuum cleaners, shampooers, polishers and trolleys
  • learning how best to use the equipment and using it safely

What skills do I need?

You'll need to have a variety of skills, including:

  • The ability to work as part of a team but also independently: this is important as you'll be responsible for cleaning your own floor under the instruction of the Head Housekeeper.
  • Attention to detail: to make sure all rooms are perfectly presented before guests arrive.

What qualifications do I need?

Often, the Head Housekeeper will have worked as a Housekeeper for a while to make sure they have a thorough understanding of the job. Larger employers will have training available.

Is it the right job for me?

To be a good Housekeeper, you'll need to take pride in your work. You should be someone who is happy to work independently, often to tight deadlines. Rooms may need to be cleaned quickly and efficiently before the next guests arrive.
