What does the job involve?
As Personnel and Training Manager, you?ll play an active role in looking after the welfare of the whole team. It?s important that all the staff know you and feel able to come to you with any problems.
You?ll play a key role in recruiting staff, dealing with problems, advising heads of department and the hotel manager, arranging temporary, part-time and casual staff, ensuring that pay and leave records are accurately kept, PAYE is deducted correctly, the service charge shared equitably, and so on.
You may also be involved in standardising policy on discipline, creating/maintaining a staff handbook, and producing reports for business planning and unions.
Key responsibilities
Important areas of a Personnel and Training Manager?s work include:
- getting involved in hands-on training
- encouraging and organising others to train
- acting as an assessor if your hotel is involved in NVQs/SVQs, and perhaps as centre contact for the awarding body
- getting new staff off on the right note, including setting up an induction programme
What skills do I need?
You?ll need a variety of skills for this role including:
- Good people skills: you?ll need to be able to deal with people easily and win their trust.
- Excellent training and recruitment skills: in addition to training staff, you?ll need to learn how best to recruit and counsel people, and be confident dealing with disciplinary matters.
- Discretion: confidentiality is important in this role.
What qualifications do I need?
If you?re acting as an assessor for the hotel involved in NVQs/SVQs, you?ll need the appropriate qualifications. You can train for National Vocational Qualifications and membership of the Institute of Personnel Development.
