What does the job involve?

As Sous Chef, you'll be expected to produce top-quality cuisine. You'll be working under the instruction of the head chef, and will take charge of the kitchen in their absence. You'll also be involved in staff development and training.

Key responsibilities

Important areas of a Sous Chef's work include:

  • running the kitchen when the head chef is away
  • managing food purchasing and storage
  • maintaining a safe and hygienic kitchen environment

What skills do I need?

As Sous Chef you'll need:

  • Strong leadership skills: to motivate and run a kitchen successfully.
  • First-rate culinary skills: you'll be expected to produce top quality cuisine.

What qualifications do I need?

Catering colleges are the best place to prepare for a job in the kitchen. There are many courses to choose from around the country. If you're not able to take up a formal course, there are still plenty of opportunities to work your way up. You could start as a kitchen attendant and apply for any training your employer can offer.

Is it the right job for me?

To be a successful Sous Chef, you'll need excellent culinary skills. You'll be someone who enjoys working under pressure, and be happy to take charge of the kitchen when required. You'll also need to motivate and lead junior members of staff who may also be working under pressure.
